IMO even Linux has better image viewers than MacOS. If color management is critical for you, XnView is probably the best free image viewer for MacOS. On my M1 Air, the P3 images on this website of umbrellas in Italy and sunset in Iceland look more saturated in Preview than in qView. I don't believe it is color managed.īut as I said, to me it looks like Preview interprets this test image correctly as sRGB whereas qViewer takes the sRGB values and interprets them in the P3 color space that my display is set to. What is qViewer? I have version 4.0 of qView. There isn't really a way of showing you exactly what I see on my screen. The lower image, displayed in qViewer, looks way more saturated on my screen than the top one from Preview. Unfortunately, it is not of much use, since the difference between the two test images looks far bigger on my screen than in the web browser. You can choose a different profile in display preferences when you are doing other activities such as watching films. Then you choose that when editing for print. The default P3 is probably too satuated for photo editing.Ĭalibration of your monitor to printer is the best way to get what will match the final print with what you see on screen. Try wide gamut RGB and compare it with the other choices. There is a difference in the overly satuated look between Apple RGB, Adobe RGB and wide gamut RGB. Is there a way to assign a color space to an app? Can I do anything to make all apps display colors correctly? Especially with an image viewing app like qViewer I am really surprised it doesn't properly recognize color spaces. But using an sRGB display setting is not exactly the point of buying a Macbook Pro with a great hi gamut display, is it? If I choose that one then the colors seem correct in all apps. In the display system preferences, there are various presets. These apps display only AdobeRGB images (seemingly) correctly, but not sRGB: LibreOffice, qViewer, Adobe Readerĭoes that mean that some apps are simply not color-managed and just use the display's color space (P3 in this case)? These apps display sRGB images (and AdobeRGB) correctly: Adobe Photoshop, Preview, Photos, Firefox, Safari They look as if sRGB RGB values were interpreted as hi gamut color space. Unfortunately the colors in the sRGB images look way too saturated in some apps. A few images I got from photo pros are AdobeRGB. Īlmost all images on my Mac are sRGB and marked as such. That was before I replaced my Windows 10 computer with a new Macbook Pro M1. There was a time when I thought color management was a piece of cake on a Mac.
